Program Notes for Parade of the Tall Ships

Composer: Jay Chattaway
Arranger: Jay Chattaway

Jay Chattaway, the composer of our next tune, served as chief arranger and composer-in-residence for the Navy band in Washington, D.C. for seven years.

On July 4, 1976, as part of our national bicentennial celebration, there was in New York harbor the largest gathering of tall ships ever assembled. This gathering was called Operation Sail.

To commemorate this occasion, Chattaway wrote Parade of the Tall Ships, a unique concert march.

Chattaway dedicated the march to Commander Ned Muffley and the United States Navy Band, who premiered the piece as part of the Operation Sail activities.

Join with us now in the majestic musical imagery of sailing ships, as we play for you Jay Chattaway’s Parade of the Tall Ships.
